A look at the following maps using data
from 1959 to 2003 may help us understand tornado location and frequency. From May 1st to May 9th there doesn't appear to be
any real pattern showing one state over others in tornado alley. The data base
shows 2466 tornadoes in the first 9 days of May with 5 F5s found in the data
base during that period. May 10th to the 19th showed 2714 tornadoes with
just 3 F5s. May 20th to the 29th showed 2436 tornadoes with just 1
F5.
Notice
the shift to the north and west from May to June in tornado locations on the next map.
Looking
from May 30th to June 8th there were 2802 tornadoes listed and one F5. June 9th
to the 17th showed 2362 tornadoes and 2 F5s. June 18th to the 26th listed 1914
tornadoes and NO F5s. June 27th to July 5th we found 1622 tornadoes and
NO f5s. July 6th to July 14th even less tornadoes, 1307 tornadoes with
NO F5s. July 15 to July 23rd 1167 tornadoes with 1 F5. After this
tornadoes drop off to 980 listed in the data base from July 24th to August 1st.
August 2nd to the 11th about the same as the beginning of August, 937 tornadoes
listed in the data base. From August 12th to 21st we found 856 tornadoes. But
now tornado frequency becomes very low after this with just 675 listed from
August 22nd to August 30th. Nothing like our two previous maps.
Maps and data were created with Severe Plot v.2.5 by John Hart and Paul Janish
Storm Prediction Center.
