Of the total tornadoes 20% would be classified as strong/violent
during this period which is a drop in percent of violent tornadoes
from the month of April which was a high 29%. 48 States in the US have recorded
tornadoes in May since 1959. 57 of these
tornadoes have had a track length of greater than 50 miles.
During May 614 deaths have been recorded from
these tornadoes from 1959 to 2004. By this time of year our tornado
map is getting painted in with red because of the high number of
tornadoes reported in May.
May is a typical month that all storm chasers will be out.
Of all the months of the year that storm chasers are found chasing
storms, this month is the busiest often bringing over 100 chasers on
one storm at the same time.
